With the new year right around the corner, this is the perfect time to take a look at the landscape of artificial intelligence in 2023 and the unprecedented advancements that happened. From cutting-edge research breakthroughs to practical applications transforming industries, this post delves into the latest and most exciting developments propelling AI into new milestones.<\/p>\n

The Season Of Generative AI and\u00a0LLMs<\/h3>\n

One of the biggest things to have happened in 2023 is the rapid growth of conversational AI like Chat GPT going from new technology to mainstream usage. This began with Open AI\u2019s Chat GPT and Chat GPT plus opening the gate of Chatbots and generative AI, and Open AI\u2019s Chat GPT-4 being released this year was only the beginning of the journey. The integration of Chat GPT into Bing was one of the biggest steps into Chatbot mainstream usage, a journey that was sped up with Google unveiling Bard to the world. Although through it all Open AI kept its lead by creating an Android and iOS app and integrating it\u2019s sister project Dall-e (and the updates it had) to allow for image generation.<\/p>\n

Meta\u2019s release of Llama 2<\/a> was further proof that the Large Language Model (LLM) chatbot journey would only continue to evolve. One of the biggest proof of this continued growth rate is Open AI releasing their Customisable versions of Chat GPT (GPTs)<\/a> allowing for people to create GPT that can be more specific for what they want out of their chatbots.<\/p>\n

As a testament to the growth and development speed of the AI space Inflection AI released Inflection 1<\/a>, an LLM that makes it easier to create a scalable model, in May and its update inflection 2 in November. On the other hand we have new blood like Pika animation AI being released<\/a> allowing for the average person to be able to create their own animation projects.<\/p>\n

Technological Advancements<\/h3>\n

Chatbots and LLMs were not the only things that made waves in the world of AI. Colossal-AI\u2019s<\/a> and Nvidia\u2019s Modulus<\/a> collaborated with PyTorch 2.0<\/a> based framework to enrich their open-source ecosystem. Tesla also released Optimus Gen 1<\/a> in March of 2023 and then several months later released its update Optimus Gen 2 in December, another testament to how fast the tech world was moving and changing. Mistral AI\u2019s<\/a> Mistral 7B was released creating fast, open-source and secure language models designed to be easy to use, even for people who are not familiar with coding or AI. Jina AI<\/a> also released their 8K Text Embedding Model, the only open-source solution supporting an 8k token\u00a0length.<\/p>\n

Google<\/h3>\n

Google was very busy this year with not only releasing Bard but also PaLM 2<\/a> a language model with improved multilingual, reasoning and coding capabilities and RT-2<\/a> the first vision-language action (VLA) robotics transformer model. On top of all of this they also integrated AI into their search engine and their workspace, released Duet AI, integrated generative AI to personalise Android devices and released the Gemini Language model. Google Deepmind also released Gemini<\/a>, a multimodal model that can reason seamlessly across text, images, video, audio, and\u00a0code.<\/p>\n

The strides made in Generative AI, LLM, and the advancement of the technology have not only surpassed expectations but have also opened doors to a realm of possibilities previously deemed unimaginable. As we say goodbye to 2023, we look forward to how the evolution of AI will continue, shaping a landscape that challenges our perceptions and redefines the very essence of what\u2019s achievable.
